Mobile website consultancy leads to 37.5% increase in revenue per visitor
Revenue per visitor on mobile and tablet devices increases by 32.2% and 41.3% respectively after successful consultancy and testing for online action sports store, FreestyleXtreme.
The FreestyleXtreme.com website had an unresponsive design, making it challenging to use on mobile devices.
After identifying the mobile and tablet user experience as a significant area for improvement, Fresh Egg carried out user testing and other qualitative research. This research led to the provision of comprehensive recommendations to create a new version of the website for mobile devices.
With the mobile usability issues being so significant, and with a short amount of time to make changes before Google’s mobile-friendly update went live, it was impractical to create a fully responsive website. Instead, a mobile version of the site was created to satisfy the needs of both mobile and tablet visitors.
The new mobile site featured an improved user experience throughout the site and a simplified checkout process.
After the new site launched, tests were presented to see which variation – the original desktop version or the new mobile version – performed better.
The experiment was presented to all mobile and tablet users across the 20 different country ‘storefronts’ that FreestyleXtreme own. The original site was shown to 50% of these users, with the other 50% seeing the new mobile variation.
The experiment was run for a period of 30 days, with a suitable sample size and to 95%+ statistical significance. This ensured the results recorded were valid and that financial impact could be accurately calculated.
The new mobile site was a resounding success, with big uplifts in the revenue per visitor for both tablet and mobile users.
Thanks to the improved user experience and simplified checkout process, revenue per visitor increased by 32.3% for mobile users.
For tablet users, the impact was even larger – a 41.3% increase in revenue per visitor.
The site also now meets Google’s mobile-friendly requirements, which will help to secure mobile organic search visibility.
The improvements made to the site are forecast to deliver significant revenue gains for FreestyleXtreme which can be reinvested in further optimisation work and on acquiring additional traffic.
Revenue per visitor is calculated by dividing the total revenue per variation by the number of visitors who saw that variation. This means it takes into account both conversion rate and average order value.
