Friday Social Round Up: Facebook Mystery Conference, Facebook Status Arrest and Google+ Pan and Zoom

Facebook20Facebook mystery conference

Facebook has announced that it is holding a mystery conference on Tuesday 15 January. This has prompted an increase in Facebook stock to over $30 for the first time since it was released.

Facebook does not usually hold major press events at its head office, so tongues have been wagging. The most common belief is that a Facebook/HTC smartphone deal is about to be announced, despite Mark Zuckerberg having denied any plans for a Facebook mobile in September.

Jailed for Facebook status

Teenager Jacob Cox-Brown made two stupid mistakes. The first and most serious act of stupidity was to drink and drive on New Year’s Eve. The second was to brag about it on Facebook, also mentioning that he had also hit two cars.

Recognising that he was an idiot, it was said that at least two of his friends reported him to the police. Jacob was subsequently arrested.

While he can’t be arrested for drink driving because the police cannot prove his blood alcohol levels, they were able to match Cox-Brown’s car to damage on the two cars he hit, and as such he has been arrested for failing to perform the duties of a driver.

Google+ pan and zoom

In what appears to be a bid to attract more artists and photographers, Google has added a pan and zoom function to high res images on Google+. When users open a large photo lightbox, they can use their mouse wheel to zoom in or out of the image and click and drag to pan in any direction.

As you can see in the image below, there is a box in the upper left-hand side of the window that allows you to see which part of the picture you are viewing.

Viral video

This week’s viral video had to be Tom from McFly’s wedding speech, which has had close to 5 million views in four days. The boy band singer admits that he isn’t a very good public speaker, so instead rewrote one of the band’s songs to make it into a thank you speech.

Infographic time

Companies often see social media as a waste of time, but what they don’t realise is that it gives them the opportunity for some great market research.
