Friday Social Search Round Up: Twitter Advertising Promotion, Facebook Search, Search Market Figures

Twitter prompting users to advertise
An article from Barry Schwartz this week shows that Twitter may be making significant developments in the way in which they approach their advertising options.
There are reports of users seeing a message appearing at top of their timeline which reads “Advertise on Twitter” followed by “Grow your followers and help them spread the word about you.”
When 'Start now' is clicked it takes the user to Twitter's advertising hub, which currently only certain accounts have access to.
Twitter have confirmed this has been in testing for a couple of weeks but declined to explain how it selects the users who receive the prompt.
Google release new YouTube app for iOS
On Tueday this week, Google released their new YouTube app for iOS. There are three main enhancements in this release:
- More videos to watch: The YouTube iOS app has more videos including tens of thousands of official music videos.
- Easier to find: A new swipe-out YouTube guide gives you instant access to your subscribed channels. New search tools give suggestions while you type, and let you search for videos or channels to find what matters to you.
- More ways to share: You can now share videos on Facebook, Google+ and texts, as well as Twitter and email. You can also create and watch playlists of videos.
August search market figures from comScore
comScore has released its latest August search market figures, which see Bing reach "an all time high":
- Google: 66.4% (66.8% in July)
- Bing: 15.9% (15.7% in July)
- Yahoo: 12.8% (13.0% in July)
- Ask: 3.2% (3.1% in July)
- AOL: 1.7% (1.5% in July)
Zuckerberg confirms Facebook are working on search
In an interview at TechCrunch Disrupt this Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook have a team working on a search offering. According to him, Facebook is currently running around one billion searches per day "and we're not even trying". This could be good news for users as the current search offering is limited and unpredictable. Additionally, we've found that if you are using Facebook 'as a page' you often can't even get results to display.
During the interview, Zuckerberg also gave away a few more titbits of information with quotes such as:
"Facebook is pretty uniquely positioned to answer a lot of questions people have."
"These are queries you could potentially do on Facebook if we built it out."
"At some point we’ll do it… we have a team working on search."
Viral video and infographic of the week
This week's video is not so viral, but it's a really interesting one that Scott discovered that reminds us of the potential power of YouTube as a marketing channel. It seems that a few years ago video was trendy, but then died away when distractions such as Pinterest and Instagram came along.
