Fresh Egg's 2015/2016 Digital Marketing Apprentices – What We’ve Learned So Far
On 14 September 2015, Fresh Egg welcomed its second year of apprentices in partnership with apprenticeship provider 3AAA. There are currently five apprentices at Fresh Egg who are making their way through the various departments such as account management, technical SEO, inbound marketing, biddable media and insight. This 3 part series will follow our progress through our rotations at Fresh Egg.
The apprenticeship scheme here at Fresh Egg allows us to rotate departments every four months. This means we can learn all about the different services that Fresh Egg provides. We also go to college once a month and have a day a week to complete work so we can gain a City and Guilds, Level 3 Digital Marketing Diploma.
If you’re considering a digital marketing apprenticeship, you can download our application form at the bottom of this post.
Read on to find out how we’re getting on so far.
- First rotation: account management
- Next rotations: technical SEO
“Fresh Egg has been the perfect introduction to the industry and I look forward to expanding my skill set as my apprenticeship continues.”
Being immersed in such a fast moving industry has given me essential experience and knowledge of the world of digital marketing. This apprenticeship has allowed me to confirm my desire to pursue a marketing career in the future. I have now been here for four months and there is no denying that I have learnt a lot!
Personally, I chose to do an apprenticeship as I knew that the number of people going to university is rising significantly. I wanted to stand out from the crowd and gain real and in-depth industry experience.
My first rotation has been in the account management team. I’ve learnt masses about the different departments here at Fresh Egg and how they work together to contribute to the services provided. During my stint in account management I have learnt various techniques that can be used when planning client activity such as SOSTAC (situation analysis, objectives, strategy, tactics, action and control), RACE (reach, act, convert and engage) and SMART(specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time based). I have also been involved in various meetings and client calls. To top this off, I’ve gained a Google Analytics qualification as well, which is the first of many to come.
As well as this, I was given the privilege and responsibility of conducting marketing tasks for Fresh Egg, which incorporates overseeing and organising online content such as blog posts, resources and case studies using Fresh Egg’s content management system. This includes writing meta descriptions and alt text to comply with Fresh Egg’s SEO best practice. I also create and write the Eggpress, our monthly internal newsletter, which is ridiculously fun.
I have kept track of my progress through various 121s, which have been really useful in terms of personal development. Everyone who works at Fresh Egg is super supportive and they will always answer questions to the best of their abilities. They are also really friendly so I felt like part of the team in no time!
I am incredibly grateful for this apprenticeship as it has given me essential insight into the world of work. Fresh Egg has been the perfect introduction to the industry and I look forward to expanding my skill set as my apprenticeship continues.

“The apprenticeship scheme is truly the most rewarding work experience I’ve come across to date”
As an apprentice at Fresh Egg, I’ve gained invaluable access to exciting and advanced tools that allow me to look deep into the heart of our clients’ websites and find out what makes them tick.
I started off in the technical SEO department, where I got the opportunity to learn what Google looks for in websites. I’ve also learnt to adopt the ethos of ‘customer first’ optimisation, which is Google’s vision for the internet’s future.
The apprenticeship scheme is truly the most rewarding work experience I’ve come across to date. It’s a great stepping stone onto other opportunities even if I decide digital marketing isn’t for me (which I think is unlikely!).
- First rotation: biddable media
- Next rotation: inbound marketing
“I’ve enjoyed my time in this department and am coming away from it with a much broader knowledge of digital marketing - and a lot more qualified!”
I joined the biddable media team at Fresh Egg as an apprentice in September 2015. Four months later and I’m at the end of my first rotation. These first four months have been a very exciting experience for me as the work I’ve done is completely different to anything I’ve done before. It’s also been a massive learning curve but I’ve really enjoyed myself here so far. Since joining the biddable media team I have learnt a lot, bearing in mind I didn’t have a large range of knowledge about digital marketing when I first started. I’ve now managed to pass six exams, including:
- Google AdWords Fundamentals
- Google Search Advertising
- Google Display Advertising
- Google Video Advertising
- Google Shopping Advertising
- Bing Ads Accredited Professional
I’ve also had the chance to work within different AdWords accounts and to see how paid advertising works first hand. I’ve also helped create different campaigns and I created my own AdWords account from scratch. As well as this, I’ve discovered a lot of useful Excel shortcuts thanks to Nate (head of biddable media at Fresh Egg). Overall, I’ve enjoyed my time in this department and am coming away from it with a much broader knowledge of digital marketing - and a lot more qualified! I’m also really looking forward to the rest of my time here at Fresh Egg.

“I’m really enjoying learning as much as I can and building upon my experience.”
Being an apprentice at Fresh Egg has been a very eye-opening experience into the world of digital marketing. I’ve gained valuable experience and knowledge in departments I have never worked in before.
I previously worked in a content marketing role, but I was keen to broaden my horizons and learn more about digital marketing as a whole. In the last four months I have been working among such knowledgeable and experienced people, and learning what goes on in the biddable media department.
Not only have I learnt how accounts are structured, I’ve also learnt important background information about how PPC advertising and paid search work. There’s so much more that goes into it than I would have expected!
I’ve also had the great opportunity of gaining five qualifications (Bing Advertising, Google Search, Advanced Search, Advanced Display and Video Advertising), and these have really strengthened my grasp of biddable media. There’s a lot to revise but it’s definitely worth putting in the work to get the qualifications!
I have particularly enjoyed learning about the multitude of ways that you can target your ads - this is something I had no clue about before I joined this department.
Fresh Egg is a friendly and exciting place to work. There’s always something new to learn or an expert person to draw wisdom and knowledge from. I’m really enjoying learning as much as I can and building upon my experience. I am really looking forward to my next two rotations in insight and technical SEO.

“Almost immediately I was given real responsibilities which gave my work a level of purpose that education and exams never provided.”
This apprenticeship has been the most beneficial learning curve to my career, and I am so lucky to be sharing this year the most amazing and influential people. In September 2015 I started my first rotation with the inbound marketing team - where I learnt how to use content management systems, conducted digital PR and helped look after the Fresh Egg social channels. At Fresh Egg, they’re not afraid to get you stuck into client work. Almost immediately I was given real responsibilities which gave my work a level of purpose that education and exams never provided.
My inbound experience started with lots of training, to get an understanding of the things I would be taking part in and contributing to. Needless to say the training was worth it. I used to go into meetings not having a clue what half of the abbreviations meant and now I can contribute confidently to discussions.
After the training period was over, I started to review client blog posts, learnt small bits of code to help CMS data entry, wrote meta descriptions, contacted tourist boards on behalf of our client, wrote client- facing documents (which is a big task and one that I am very proud of), created Vine content, and posted to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn for Fresh Egg. (This list is definitely not exhaustive!)
What this all comes down to is the fact that none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for the supportive and awesome members of the inbound marketing team. Whenever I needed help, no matter whether the question was big or small, I was never made to feel silly for asking and they would always be so polite and patient. I am grateful for that!
