Google Search Redesign, MyBlogGuest penalised, Yandex drops links – Digital Marketing News
Hello and welcome to Fresh Egg’s Digital Marketing News. In this edition, we talk about the penalisation of MyBlogGuest.com, Yandex, Google’s rollout of the search redesign, updates to Facebook and tests within Twitter.
After Google’s promise in January to clamp down on guest blogging, Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s web spam team, has announced a large guest blog network had action taken against it.
Although he did not mention what guest blog network was targeted, it was quickly confirmed to be MyBlogGuest.com by the owner, Ann Smarty.
Although the platform was against using the service to build spammy links, against Google’s guidelines, some were using the network just to build links.
Matt Cutts also hinted sites connected to the ‘network’ would also, potentially, receive penalties.

Yandex drops links as a ranking factor
Back in December 2013, the Russian search engine Yandex announced they were to stop using links as a ranking factor. Although it is currently only running in the Moscow region and impacts only commercial related queries, this shows a search engine future without links at the forefront of ranking factors. But what else are they looking at?

Alexander Sadovsky, who is the Head of Web Search at Yandex, said: “We’re looking at over 800 factors, but you can say that user interaction with a site has become much more important and is a much clearer and natural signal. So, for instance, we’re looking at the ease of making a purchase, ease of using the site and even how wide the range of goods on offer is from the site owners.”

Google search redesign goes live for all
As we indicated last week, Google has now rolled out the redesign of their search pages to all users. The new design has a bigger font size and removes the underlines on links. The tinted background to the advertisements has also been removed.

Google has said this new design “improves readability and creates an overall cleaner look.”
This follows the redesign Larry Page envisioned when he started as CEO in 2011, bringing Google search in line with the mobile version, and other products such as Google Now and Android. This design consistency helps usability and allows them to “develop and ship improvements quicker across the board”.

A streamlined look for Facebook Pages
A new cleaner design for Facebook pages is in the works. This returns the timeline into a single column format on the right. While the left-side column of your timeline will feature information about your business, including a map, opening hours, website URL, photos and videos.

Facebook also announced further information to compare to other businesses with the ‘Pages to Watch’ feature. This allows admins to “create a list of Pages similar to their own and compare the performance of their Page with that of the businesses they care about” within the Insights tab.
