Welcome Gavin, Our Fab New Experience Designer

By Emma Couling|17 Sept 2025
We caught up with Gavin Groves, who joins in the new role of Experience Designer. We asked Gav about his career to date, his vision for the role, and what colleagues and clients can expect from him.
Firstly, welcome, Gav. Tell us a bit about your career to date and how you arrived as an Experience Designer at Fresh Egg?
Thank you! I have been working with agencies since 2018, and over time, transitioned into the digital side of things. I have been freelancing for the past few years, but I wanted a more collaborative environment, so Fresh Egg really stood out. I believe that every day is a school day, and after learning more about Fresh Egg, it became clear that this agency aligns with my values and aspirations as a designer.
Describe your career path to date and how you got into design
I fell in love with design during my GCSEs. Design Tech was one of my options, with a focus on creating physical products.
I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of it, but the part I loved the most was the sketchbook/computer "designing." I'm not sure why I enjoyed it so much; it was just something that resonated with me. From there, I studied design in college and university, which enabled me to secure my first role as an Artworker in a small, local agency
Since then, I have been refining my purpose and craft in the digital space, and here I am!

Gavin's Fab Formula for Design Brilliance
I have a passion for creating user-friendly products and services, combined with my critical thinking, a learning mindset, and a love for design, which strikes a healthy balance between usability and aesthetics.
Which app or website gives you major design envy?
https://wodniack.dev/ - This developer’s portfolio is seriously impressive. I love the immersion and spatial awareness baked into the UI.
When did you last have a major “aha!” moment in a usability test?
I was working on designing a new discounts app, and the client wanted to use star ratings for experiences. After testing, I realised that because the app was in its infancy, if a user rated an experience three stars or less, it would appear as being low-rated shortly after launch. To circumvent this, I proposed a thumbs up/thumbs down system.
If an experience had more thumbs up, an additional label in the UI would read “Highly rated”. This allowed for a rating system that required less thought from users and prevented the perception that poor-quality experiences would be featured on the app.
What tools do you rely on and why?
- Notebook and pen to scribble down ideas/brainstorm
- Adobe CS, Figma, and other tools to bring those scribbles to life
- External trackpad to heighten productivity in my workflow
- System timers for timeboxing/timekeeping
What’s your favourite song, podcast, or playlist?
Jazz House Vibes is my go-to playlist at the moment. Check it out.
Finally, (the most important question), what is your favourite way to eat an egg? (if there is one!)
